Starting New Gas Service With Gas South
Whether you're moving into a new home or setting up natural gas service for the first time, you've got enough on your plate. We're here to make getting natural gas easy, straight-forward and stress free.
What to Expect When Signing Up for Natural Gas Service With Gas South
Because natural gas is deregulated in Georgia, you aren't stuck with a single natural gas provider. You have the power to choose a gas company like Gas South that offers great rates and customer support, while the local utility Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) handles the physical delivery.
Easy from the Start
Getting natural gas service shouldn't be complicated. That's why we've made it easy to compare plans, sign up in minutes and manage your account whenever it's convenient for you.
Step 1: Choose your plan
While the cost of natural gas can fluctuate throughout the year, choosing a plan comes down to two things: how long you'll need service and how you prefer to manage your monthly costs. To keep choosing simple, we offer three plans: Fixed Rate, Variable Rate and OnePrice Plan®.
- Term Length: If you need service for less than six months, a variable-rate plan offers flexibility with no commitment, though your rate will change from month to month as the natural gas market fluctuates. If you expect to stay six months or longer, a fixed-rate plan or OnePrice Plan can provide more predictable costs.
- Monthly Bill Predictability: Fixed- and variable-rate plans charge based on the amount of natural gas you use, measured in therms, so your bill may change with usage and, in the case of a variable-rate plan, the market price of gas. If you'd rather know what to expect each month, OnePrice Plan offers a predictable monthly payment.

Online, you can view our rates and plans and descriptions for each before making your selection. Or give us a call, and we’d be happy to walk you through choosing your plan:
Complete your signup.
First, you’ll provide your service address, billing address and your social security number or tax ID number. After a soft credit check, you’ll choose from one of our plans and we’ll ask you for your preferred day to start service.
Frozen credit? We’ll need to run a soft credit check to start service. Temporarily unfreeze it online at Equifax or call 888-298-0045.
Await appointment confirmation.
Once your preferred turn-on date is selected, Gas South will coordinate with AGL to schedule your appointment. During their busy seasons, it can take 7-10 days to get an appointment with AGL. Learn more in our Turning On Your Natural Gas Service FAQs below.
Register your online account.
After your appointment has been scheduled, you'll be able to register for your free online account services on our website to help you manage your plan.
Step 3: Service Starts
On the date of your appointment, AGL will send a technician to your home to physically turn your natural gas on. The technician will need access to your gas meter, which means you should take appropriate steps beforehand to make sure there are no locked gates, fences or alarms that would prevent this. This appointment window typically ranges between 3 – 4 hours. Need More Info? See FAQs below.

Frequently Asked Questions About Starting Gas Service
Signing Up For Service
What makes shopping for natural gas service in Georgia different?
Unlike some states where a single utility company holds a monopoly, Georgia’s natural gas market is deregulated. This means that the market is split into two parts that give you the choice to choose your natural gas provider:
- The Infrastructure: A utility company, like Atlanta Gas Light (AGL), owns and maintains the physical pipelines, delivers the gas safely to your home, and responds to emergencies.
- The Provider (Your Choice): Certified natural gas marketers compete for your business. While market rates are influenced by the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), marketers can offer different plan types, special incentives and customer service experiences.
How do I know if Gas South services my area?
Gas South provides natural gas service to hundreds of Georgia communities. Visit our Areas We Serve page to view some of our most popular service areas or search for your address to confirm service availability.
What natural gas plans are available to me with Gas South?
Gas South offers three distinctive plans to help suit your needs:
- Fixed rate plans, where the price you pay per unit of natural gas will remain the same over a 6-, 12- or 24-month term
- Variable rate plans, where your rate per therm tends to fluctuate month to month (sometimes a good option for short-term users who require service for 6 months or less)
- OnePrice Plan®, an easy flat monthly gas bill calculated based on the size of your home and how much gas a household that size uses every year
For more information about your options and customer discounts, visit our Rates and Plans page.
Does Gas South require a contract?
There’s no written contract for residential or small commercial customers, though you do enter an agreement when choosing a fixed-rate plan or OnePrice Plan that requires you to pay an early termination fee if you cancel before your term of service has ended—detailed in our Terms and Conditions. Some large business customers are required to sign a contract when they receive customized pricing.
If you’re looking for more flexibility with no commitment, Gas South’s variable rate plan does not require a contract (most suitable for short-term residents needing service for 6 months or less).
Does Gas South offer a program for credit-challenged customers?
Yes. Gas South offers our BridgePlan program as an alternative to the Regulated Provider's Program, and to bring choice and savings to credit-challenged natural gas customers.
For more information about our BridgePlan program, please visit our Rates, Plans and Fees FAQ page.
Does Gas South require a deposit?
No! Gas South doesn't require a deposit from a residential customer who is approved for service. If you're shopping for natural gas service in Georgia, please visit our rate plans to view current promotions.
Are there fees for signing up for natural gas service?
There are no fees for customers switching their natural gas service to Gas South from another natural gas provider, although Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) does charge a switch fee of $7.50 for customers switching marketers more than once in a 12-month period. For customers turning on service in their name, there is a connection fee of up to $75. For more information on fees, please visit our Rates, Plans and Fees FAQ page.
Does Gas South check my credit when signing up for service?
Yes. Gas South performs a soft credit check on all new sign-ups to determine plan eligibility, but this won’t affect your credit score. And if you’re worried about currently having little or no credit, you’ve still got options with Gas South for new natural gas service.
Turning On Your Natural Gas Service
Can I schedule the exact date and time to turn on my new natural gas service?
Yes and no. You’ll be able to specify when you’d like to have your natural gas turned on at sign-up, and then we’ll coordinate your turn-on appointment with Atlanta Gas Light (AGL), your Georgia utility company. But it’s important to know that while you’ll purchase your natural gas from Gas South at a great rate, AGL is responsible for performing the physical turn-on of your natural gas. We do our best to have them honor your preferred appointment time, but it’s ultimately up to AGL’s availability and beyond Gas South’s control.
Will I receive anything confirming the details of my sign-up?
Yes. After you’ve successfully signed up, we’ll send you a welcome email and letter confirming your sign-up that also includes other important details about your account. And then you’ll receive additional communications about your turn-on appointment with AGL.
Do I need to be at the location to have natural gas turned on?
It depends. In some situations when gas is currently being delivered to your address—common in some renter scenarios where a landlord or management company keeps service on—no one will need to be on site. But in all other situations, yes, someone 18 or older will need to be present. Besides needing access to your meter, the AGL technician will also need to come inside your home to perform a routine safety check. All pets should be secured, and you’ll need to have your water and electricity on.
How long will it take for my natural gas service to turn on?
How fast your natural gas is activated depends entirely on whether your service is currently on or turned off:
- If your natural gas is completely turned off, a technician will need to come to your home to turn it on. This appointment window typically ranges between 3 – 4 hours.
- If the gas is already on, all the tech needs to do is check the meter and make sure everything is up and running correctly, and safely.
How far in advance should I schedule my service?
You should schedule your connection at least 7 to 10 days before your move-in date. During peak moving seasons (spring and summer) or when the weather first drops in the fall, AGL’s appointment calendar can fill up quickly.
With Gas South, you can schedule your turn on date 90 days in advance, which means you can lock in a great rate today. All you have to do is schedule your turn on date and leave the rest to us!
