How does natural gas service work in Georgia?

In 2020, the state of Georgia consumed an estimated 759 Bcf of natural gas across all areas of activity. The transportation sector accounts for the highest volume, which can likely be attributed to Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the busiest passenger airport in the world. Georgia’s industrial sector accounts for about 20%, which stems from the manufacture of food, beverages, tobacco products, chemicals and paper. In the residential sector, about 20% of all Georgia households use natural gas for home heating.

Natural gas in Georgia is distributed from four interstate pipelines through more than 80 utilities. Most consumers receive natural gas from their local utility, also called a local distribution company, or LDC. Utilities are either owned by investors or local governments. These companies operate the systems that deliver natural gas to consumers, and they are responsible for maintaining gas lines and responding to gas-related emergencies.

In 1997, the state of Georgia passed legislation that allowed natural gas choice for consumers in Atlanta Gas Light's Company's service area. This gives residents, businesses and municipalities the opportunity to partner with natural gas marketers, who can offer more rate options and a superior customer experience.
